Join Mind Offline for a picturesque workshop at the stunning PRFCT Earth Project gardens located in Springs. This magical property belongs to the renowned landscape architect and environmental activist Edwina VonGal and is a chemical-free sanctuary filled with pollinators and wildlife. Proceeds support PRFCT Earth PRJCT which promotes toxin-free lawns and landscapes for the health of people, their pets, and the planet.

Intro to Botanical Dye - Eco Printed Tea Towel Workshop

In this workshop, you will discover the magic, art and science of botanical dyeing via the process of creating your own printed cotton tea towel using flowers, roots, leaves and barks. We will also visit the on site dyers patch and ID different plants and flowers that can produce beautiful lasting pigments on fabrics and paper.

Workshop Details:

  • practice eco-printing with a hands a hands-on exercise to produce your own tea towel with a botanically derived design
  • learn which plants and other botanical "matter" produce dye pigments
  • learn which plants, barks and mosses you can forage or grow here on Long Island
  • learn what common household organic scraps can be used to create dye baths
  • understanding fiber types and how to choose the right fabric for different dye methods
  • learn about mordants and how they impact dye results
  • understand how heat works in the process of extracting color and methods to help 'set' your work for greater colorfastness
  • learn to embrace the innately unique beautiful aspects natural dye and get started with your own experimentation at home

Course is suitable for children or adults. Children will need to have a guardian present.

There are two session options:
Session 1 - 10:00am - 12pm
Session 2 - 1:00 - 3:00pm

Notes: You are invited to tour the gardens or picnic before or after your scheduled session. Some materials take longer to process but we aim to steam all the tea towels during the session if time allows. If you do not wish to wait for your finished material to be steamed and set, it can be picked up at a later date at Mind Offline in Sag Harbor or shipped to you. You may also steam it at home.
